It’s always a thrill to work with new artists to the Malthouse space - and in this case we celebrate the emergence of spring with a fresh collaboration between artists Em Burrow, Ruth Hathaway, Lin White, Annette Tucker, John Nelligan and Roz Duffin.
This new collective tells us “we are a group of artists who have developed a wide range of individual styles and approaches over the years for exploring a variety of subjects, hence the title of the exhibition, BRUSH STROKES. What we have in common is a desire to produce high quality paintings that stimulate interest, curiosity and delight in the viewer.”
Roz Duffin
“For me, painting is all about light. A beautiful light, often early in the morning or in the evening, can transform a fairly mundane scene into one that is magical and dramatic. My subjects usually have a strong, personal meaning. They are landscapes, seascapes or interiors that I know well and have observed closely. My aim is to convey both the magic and the truth of what I observe.”
Annette Tucker
I am a mixed media artist working primarily with landscape and still life. My work is inspired by a deep love of the countryside, with images gathered whilst out walking and observing the changing light, colour and atmosphere of rural spaces.
Still life paintings are created from imagination, allowing colour to lead the composition. Across all of my work colour plays an important role, and is used to evoke mood, memory, and a sense of place.
Ruth Hathaway
Working with mixed media, layers of texture, I enjoy discovering unexpected images in seemingly random marks. My semi-abstract works aim to surprise, and delight with a sense of both familiarity and the unknown.
Lin White
Colour and nature are the most important aspects of my art. Nature expresses everything I want to portray and colour is my wake-up call every morning. The two go hand in hand and keep me inspired continuously.
Em Burrow
My paintings are a response to what I see. By selecting familiar, everyday items, my aim is to celebrate the beauty in the ordinary and to evoke connections and memories. I thoroughly enjoy using joyful and vibrant colours and patterns, often layering my work with texture to create a rich surface. Distorting shapes and manipulating the perspective are also techniques I use in order to achieve a pleasing composition. My main artistic influences are the Fauvist painters of the early 20th century and the contemporary artists David Hockney and Mary Fedden.
