Colourful new lighting creates a striking experience!

By the start of 2026 we completed another project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund - an extensive programme of new lighting across the Town Mill site, expertly delivered by Tristan G Murless Ltd of Weymouth.

Some of the improvements were practical but important. With the Mill’s riverside setting and leafy surroundings, it can sometimes feel a little like being in a rainforest after dark - so the project included upgraded access and emergency exit lighting, helping to make the site safer and easier to navigate for visitors.

But the project also allowed us to add some magical touches too!

New colour-changing lights have been installed on mill buildings to illuminate the River Lim as people access the site from the Broad Street Car Park, underneath the micro brewery and outside the Malthouse Gallery. These luminaires can glow in a single colour, or gently shift through a colour sequence, bringing movement and atmosphere to the site after dark.

In the Miller’s Garden, key botanicals have been individually illuminated with soft up-lighters emerging from flower borders, highlighting the character of this tucked-away green space in the evenings.

And the Town Mill courtyard has also been given a lift with new festoon lighting generously strung across the space - creating the perfect setting for evening gatherings and celebrations at any time of year.

It has been possible to complete these projects thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and our other supporting funders, who have recognised the importance of maximising the appeal of the Town Mill site - its thoughtful presentation and care ensures that historic places such as the mill remain welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for everyone who visits.

Using money donated by National Lottery players, the National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. This support is specifically helping us enhance the Town Mill site, improving the way visitors experience the Mill and ensuring that this historic place continues to be enjoyed by the community and visitors for generations to come.
