Fresh New Signage Installed Across Town Mill
Our signage at Town Mill was installed back in 2001 when The National Lottery Heritage Fund first supported the town’s ambitious plan to resurrect the Mill from ruins. After almost 25 years of exposure to wild coastal storms, salt-saturated air and the occasional scorching summer, it was time for a refresh!
The signage project marks the first stage of a much larger programme of work. We have been working closely with WALLIS DESIGN AGENCY to develop a new visual identity for Town Mill, beginning with the creation of a new logo and the refresh of site signage. As we move into 2026, this identity will be reflected more widely across the site, including our branding, flour bags, shop merchandise, a refreshed shop space, social media and website. This work will also inform the reinterpretation of the Mill’s interior too, all with aim of improving the visitor experience.
As these projects progress, we are already seeing a wider impact across the site and beyond. Thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s support, we have been able to enhance the general appearance of Town Mill while strengthening our profile as a community heritage hub, with something to offer everyone that visits or who calls Town Mill home. As a result of this latest project, the Mill will also be easier to find and navigate!
We are delighted to share the new logo concept for Town Mill, which will guide the next phase of the site’s development and some images of how our new signage looks.
The new logo marks a shift towards a more distilled and confident visual identity for us. Inspired by our core elements, the movement of water and the mill wheel, the design reflects the site’s working nature and long history, while offering a calmer, more flexible identity. It allows the story of the Mill to be told more clearly from first glance across signage, printed materials and digital spaces, helping visitors feel welcome and better orientated from the moment they arrive.
The refreshed signage also uses a soft but distinctive colour palette, with each colour drawn from the site's heritage and landscape - inspired by fresh flour, heritage wheat, garden grass and blue lias.
It has been possible to complete these projects because of the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund who have recognised the significance of this free-entry heritage site in the very centre of Lyme Regis which connects both the local community and visitors alike with the rich traditions of over 700 years of stone-ground milling of flour at Town Mill and which continues daily on site to this day
Using money donated by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the U.K.’s heritage. This support has enabled us to develop the mill in a way which is attractive, meaningful and welcoming to a new generations of visitors - helping them more clearly understand what’s on offer and, mostly importantly, that what is here is for them too.
Our most grateful thanks is also extended to our other generous fundraisers whose support is deeply appreciated in helping us achieve the vision we have for a thriving future for Town Mill : Lyme Regis Town Council, Dorset County Council, Medlock Charitable Trust and Garfield Weston Foundation
