You will be guided through our Mill by an expert guide who also happens to be a Miller. Discover the restored mill with its Victorian milling machinery and watch the giant waterwheel turn as it is driven by water from the River Lym. A miller will demonstrate how the huge gears harness this power to drive the heavy grindstone. Watch the whole process over three floors as grain is converted into finely ground wholemeal flour: Wheat, Spelt and Rye are milled which is available to buy in our shop. Displays chart the history of Lyme’s Town Mill, the history of milling in general, how the Town Mill was saved from redevelopment and the mill’s lifeblood, the River Lym.
As part of the tour you will also be able to see how water from the Lym is helping with the environment by generating electricity through the Town Mill’s state of the art hydro-generating installation, and also browse the fascinating exhibition on the history of electricity in Lyme Regis.
Following your tour enjoy a pint of draft beer from our micro brewery.
A visit to The Town Mill is not complete without relaxing in the lovely cobbled courtyard with a traditional real ale brewed in Lyme Regis’ only microbrewery, in part of what was once, aptly, part of the ancient Malthouse, (first documented in the 18th century, where malt was roasted and then ground in the mill for local brewers).
Lyme Regis Brewery have been crafting award-winning artisan beers on the Jurassic Coast since 2010. The brand, founded in 2010, has established itself as a reputable micro-brewery here in our little corner of the country.
A new team took the helm of the micro brewery in 2018. Supported by a crew of family and friends, they look to continue to craft great beer and share it with friends and visitors alike.
The brewery batch produce a range of traditional cask ales, as well as modern, hoppy kegged beers. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
